It Really Is

Steve Nauman

I happened to see part of a late night infomercial promoting a product that was supposed to ‘cure’ most all common diseases, and allow you to live up to 120 years-(just like the people in the remote village where this product was discovered!) Then a vibrant, physically fit young woman started telling how she’s now taking this product herself and giving it to her two children. She was so excited because of all the years they will have together….. thanks to this wonderful product!

The next day I started thinking about the possibility of people living to be 120 years old. I needed a way to somehow visualize it, and also try to think about it in relation to “looking back in time”. So the way I did it was, I got out a sheet of graph paper, allowing 1 square per year, and the entire sheet would represent the large period of time when a person lived. I counted the squares….. I had no idea there would be 1,496 squares! Isn’t it amazing how the years fly by-even on paper! But what I noticed was that whether a life “filled-in” up to 50, 70, 90 or even the amazing 120 squares….. there were still many, many squares remaining!

I think most of us eventually find out that….. no matter what, life on this earth is uncertain and short.
In 1991, just two years before his unexpected death, Conway Twitty recorded a song written by: Bobby Fischer, Johnny MacRae and Richard Ross, called: “”Life’s Too Short (No Matter How Long It Lasts)”. The last two lines of that song say a lot:
”Too soon you’ll see how suddenly tomorrow becomes the past.
Life’s too short, no matter how long it lasts…..“

Keep in mind what we’re taught from the book of James, chapter 4 verse 14 (NASB) “Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.”  And also: Psalm 90:12 (NLT) “Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.”

It’s always a good thing to take care of our physical bodies so we can enjoy as much good health as we possibly can. And we also should enjoy our times with family and friends….. But, Life Is Short… It Really Is…………. Then what?
Hebrews 9:27 “And it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”
Something to think about……

Till Next Time…..

These wonderful posts are written by my good friend Steve Nauman. He lives on a farm in northern Indiana with his wife, Ruth.

He owned and operated a machine shop until 2020. These stories come from the people and experiences that made lasting impressions upon him as he grew up in his father's general store in Upstate NY and later in his own business.
